
In an Introduction to Academic Discourse, students are introduced to four rhetorical styles of academic writing: scholarly definitions; casual analysis; comparison; and persuasion. Moreover, the process of writing an academic composition is introduced along with the composition of different types of paragraphs, cohesion, conciseness, unity and the use of specific detail. In addition, students are alerted to common errors in English language grammar and sentence structure.
During the course, students are taught strategies for the effective comprehension of written academic texts. To complement this, students are exposed to, and are expected to learn, approximately 360 word-families based on the most frequently occurring lexis in a broad range of English language academic texts. The source of these words is the Academic Word List, which has become a global standard in international academia;
The objectives of this course are: a) to consolidate the language skills acquired from Preparatory English courses (ENGL 001, 002,); b) to introduce a variety of skills in English Discourse across all four areas of language learning to provide a foundation in English for Academic Purposes; c) to strengthen students’ general English reading and writing skills; d) to strengthen use and understanding of academic vocabulary.
